The year 1952 witnessed the dawn of a new era in the Malabar region of Kerala, when the Apostolic Carmel Congregation established Providence Women’s College, the first women’s college. This was a turning point in the lives of young women here, who till then, either had to terminate their studies after their school education in cities like Mangalore or Madras. With each passing year, the college had an increasing number of girls on its rolls and thus Providence Women’s College evolved as the ultimate destination in women’s education in Malabar.
After the initial years of functioning in the premises of Providence High School, Calicut, the college shifted to its own building atop the picturesque Florican Hill, in the year 1955. With the formation of Kerala State in 1958, the affiliation of the college was shifted from the Madras University to the University of Kerala, and in 1968, to the University of Calicut.
We draw energy and inspiration from the struggles of the past in shaping our present and redefining our future. The last two decades in Kerala saw a new awakening among women who, convinced of their equality with men started to think in terms of careers, economic independence and autonomy as individuals. In a world of religious and cultural fragmentation, of glaring economic and social inequalities and erosion of moral and spiritual values, Providence Women’s College wants to set up as Contrast community, which will uphold social justice and peace.
